Even though she can take the form of a somewhat normal sized human, it's still quite a lop-sided match. Granmammare is the personification of the sea and all life therein. Later novels show that Mahiro's warming to the idea, with outright confirmation by a third party that he is in love with Nyarko, even if he's not willing to admit it yet.
